Mazda Luce/Legato/929(L) (EU)

Differential fluid capacity & service interval

Mazda Luce/Legato/929(L) (EU) differential fluid capacity ranges from 1,2 to 1,4 liters. Service intervals include changes at 1000 km, 18000 km, and 20000 km/12 months, plus checks at 6000 km and 10000 km/6 months. The data covers 14 configurations.

The configuration chart below lists fill volumes and service intervals for each engine and trim variant.

Additional Notes

  • The Mazda Luce 1500 SUA and Luce 1800 SVA share an identical rear differential fluid capacity of 1.2 liters, and both carry the same normal-use change interval of 18,000 km.
  • An initial service change at 1,000 km is specified for the Luce 1500 SUA, Luce 1800 SVA, and all Luce Legato/929L variants. A break-in change at such a short interval is standard practice for new differentials, as metal particles shed during initial gear wear are flushed out before they can cause abrasive damage.
  • The Luce 1500 SUA and Luce 1800 SVA both list a severe and high ambient temperature use condition at the same 1.2-liter capacity, but no change interval is given for that condition in either case.
  • Moving to the LA2/3 generation, the Luce Legato/929L 1800 and 2000 both show a rear differential capacity of 1.4 liters under normal use, a step up from the 1.2-liter figure seen in the earlier SUA and SVA models.
  • The LA2/3 generation also introduces a fluid level check interval of 6,000 km alongside the 18,000 km change interval. A periodic check interval shorter than the change interval is a common way to catch leaks or contamination between full fluid changes.
  • With the LA4/5 generation covering 1977-1981, the rear differential capacity returns to 1.2 liters for both the 1800 and 2000 engine variants, down from the 1.4 liters specified for the LA2/3 generation of the same model range.
  • The LA4/5 generation adopts a dual-format service schedule, expressing the check interval as 10,000 km or 6 months and the change interval as 20,000 km or 12 months. Whichever limit is reached first would apply, which accounts for vehicles driven infrequently where time-based fluid degradation is a factor even at low mileage.
  • The normal-use change interval increases from 18,000 km in the LA2/3 generation to 20,000 km in the LA4/5 generation, a modest extension that applies equally to both the 1800 and 2000 engine configurations within that chassis series.
